Boston Pronunciation

The other night, Bill was at a Dunkin' Donuts and ordered a cruller. He pronounced it as CROO-ler. The lady behind the counter had no idea what he was saying. He tried three times and then gave up and pointed. The lady said, "You're not from around here, are you. We pronounce it CRAW-lah."

Today on our way out of Boston, we stopped for gas in a suburb and there was a Dunkin' Donuts. (They are EVERYWHERE in this area.) Bill wanted a cruller but was hesitant to order one. Luckily the crullers were the manager's special, so Bill just had to ask for the manager's special. The guy behind the counter said, "Oh, you want a CROO-ler?" Bill was happy to hear someone pronounce it the way he is used to hearing it. (The dictionary says it is pronounced CRUH-ler, so the Boston lady was probably the closest to the correct pronunciation.)

We are on our way to Buffalo, NY, for the night and then tomorrow we will drive through Canada to get to Bud and Donna's lake house for a short visit.
